The Everett Herald has opened voting for its Prep Athlete of the Week award covering Feb. 22-28, with six high school basketball players on the ballot. Polling closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be revealed alongside the next poll and in the newspaper's edition next Wednesday.

The previous week's honor went to Malia Ottow, a junior on the Snohomish girls wrestling team. Competing at 120 pounds, she captured her second consecutive Class 3A state title and finished the season undefeated. Ottow took the Feb. 15-21 award with 370 of 1,330 votes, or 27.82 percent.

Among this week's nominees is Mia Brockmeyer, a junior guard for Meadowdale girls basketball. She made five 3-pointers and scored 32 points in a Class 3A state playoff win over River Ridge on Feb. 16. She followed that with 17 points in the Mavericks' victory over Enumclaw on Feb. 22.

Sienna Capelli of Snohomish girls basketball is also in the running. The senior guard/forward hit a pair of late jump shots and sank seven of eight free throws as Snohomish closed out Evergreen of Vancouver in a Class 3A state playoff game on Feb. 28. She ended with 20 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.

Two girls players from other classifications round out the girls field. Keira Isabelle Tupua, a senior guard at Lake Stevens, scored 30 points in a lopsided Class 4A state playoff win over Bonney Lake on Feb. 22. On the same date, Stanwood senior guard Ellalee Wortham produced 27 points, 10 rebounds and three steals in a Class 3A state playoff victory.

Two boys players were nominated despite their teams' playoff losses. Caleb Greenland, a senior guard for Lakewood, scored 24 points in a Class 2A state playoff defeat to West Valley of Spokane on Feb. 22. Isaiah Kiehl, a junior guard for Monroe, scored 25 points in the Bearcats' narrow loss to Shorewood in a Class 3A state playoff game on Feb. 21.

The Herald says it picks nominees using statistics reported to the paper, coaches' recommendations and its own first-hand observations. Stats and nominee suggestions can be emailed to sports@heraldnet.com, and nominees must be submitted by 9 a.m. Monday.

The newspaper noted that an athlete may be missing from the list because individual statistics were not reported. Coaches and scorekeepers are asked to send results by 10:30 p.m. on the day of the event. Readers can cast their votes at heraldnet.com.
